How do I choose the right auto repair shop?

How do I choose the right auto repair shop?

Choosing the right auto repair shop can be a daunting and high anxiety task. Lets face it, the industry doesn't have the best reputation. TV news segments on dishonest shops has damaged the public trust. Picking a quality repair shop in Queens and Brooklyn can be really hard to do, especially with so many options. A good independent repair shop can also provide intangible benefits to their customers which a dealership can never hope to achieve. Hopefully these set of questions that you can ask can help you make the right decisions and give you some more things to think about when it comes down to who services your vehicle. General Repair Shop or Specialist? Vehicles today especially German makes such as BMW, Mercedes,  and Audi/Volkwagen can be extremely complicated in their workings. Many times a General repair shop may not have the experience, training, or tools and equipment to tackle the neccessary service your vehicle may need.  ... read more

Does the type of Coolant really matter? Short answer is YES!!!

Does the type of Coolant really matter? Short answer is YES!!!

This is a topic that comes up almost everyday here at M-Spec Performance. Questions about auto repair happen everyday but we see so many vehicle that come through our shop with the incorrect coolant in their system. Without coolant and just straight water, you could have a waterpump bearing failure prematurely due to inadequate cooling. So what about this incorrect coolant? In this e ... read more

The Importance of a Proper Wheel Alignment

The Importance of a Proper Wheel Alignment

Many of us don't realize the importance of proper wheel alignment on our cars. We tend to think that nothing much happens to our tires other than an occasional puncture. Nothing can be further from the truth. It is very important that we regularly get our wheels aligned, and some say it should be done as often as we get the car serviced. Wheel alignment is making sure that the wheels of the car are perpendicular to the road; also, it makes sure that the wheels are parallel to one other. Save Fuel When the wheels of the car are not aligned there is uneven pressure on the tires. They tend to push against each other. When that happens the car faces uneven friction and much more resistance from the road surface. This means that your car has to work that much harder to move forward and more fuel is burned than normal. When you align the wheels properly the there is much less resistance from the road surface. This results in not only a smoother drive but sometimes notice ... read more

Hit the Brakes!

Hit the Brakes!

With all the stop and go traffic in New York City, it is important to have your vehicle’s braking system functioning at peak efficiency. I remember being eighteen, driving my 95′ BMW M3 and hearing that dreaded grinding noise when applying the brakes. I knew nothing of auto repair at the time, I just knew something was not right with that noise. Hopefully, this article can take some of the mystery out of the magic that makes your car stop when you hit the pedal so next time you need brake service you can make a more informed decision. Most all cars and trucks on the road today use a hydraulic/mechanical braking system. For simplicity’s sake this example will be of a disc brake system. Some older cars have drum brakes all around and many cars use a mix of disc brake on the front and drum brakes on the rear. The difference between drum and disc brakes is the way the hydraulic fluid is used to get the wheels to stop. The majority of your braking is done by the front wheels, which more th ... read more
