The Essential Snow Storm Checklist

The Essential Snow Storm Checklist

New York City has seen its fair share of snow this winter. Make sure to follow this check list and you'll be sure to weather any storm! Battery Make sure the battery has been functioning properly and is fully charged. The cold weather may affect its performance, reducing its cranking power. If the battery hasn't been changed in years and is showing signs of weakness, replace it immediately. Windows Maintain visibility at all times.  Fill wiper fluid in order to wipe away salt, dirt and mud. Wipers Replace your wipers every 6 months or so.  Transmission Avoid overworking your car. If your car is stuck in the snow and you're slamming on the gas to get it out, your transmission light might go on. Shoveling your car out instead of trying to slam through a mountain of snow may save you an unnecessary trip to the repair shop. Oil Engine oil can be affected during the cold weather. Should you trust the dealer or an independent shop?

So you are experiencing some issue with your German vehicle. Whether you own a BMW or Mercedes Benz you know that you own an awesome albeit very complicated vehicle. You want to go to the most competent and trusted service center for your vehicle and you don't want to feel like you've been ripped off! If this sounds like the thought process you have had then here are some things to think about between dealer vs an independent. For the purposes of the comparison we have naturally used our shop (M-Spec Performance) as a reference point many times however this should apply to some reputable German car or European specialty shops around the country.  Competency The dealerships have access to manufacturer training and tools. Logically they would be the best equipped and most knowledgable source to repair your Audi, BMW, or Mercedes Benz. Why asking for "price" is the wrong question to ask

Why asking for "price" is the wrong question to ask

So you own a German Car (maybe its a BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Mini Cooper or Volkswagen) and you are looking for an auto repair shop to service your vehicle. You know you don't want to go to the dealership since their prices are sky high and the level of service leaves you wanting. You get anxious, you worry about getting ripped off. You ask friends and family what to do. You go online and google some quick answers for your particular problem whether its a noise you hear, a fluid dripping from your car or what is the next maintenance service you need. You then go on yelp or type in a google search for the best auto repair shop in your area. Armed with all this information you call up a shop and ask, "Hey I have a noise coming from my car, I think its a gyromotion arm, how much?" The shop gives you a price and you go on and call the next shop on your list. Each shop gives you a different price. Which one do you choose? The cheapest price, right? Do you have to return to the dealer to maintain your new car? NO!

Do you have to return to the dealer to maintain your new car? NO!

Did you know that it an absolute myth that you have to return to the dealer for maintenance? If you own a new car, having an independent repair shop perform maintenance services for you will not void your warranty.  Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act which is also enforced by the Fair Trade Commission (FTC), consumers are protected against the manufacturer voiding their new car warranty if a non dealer service facility performs maintenance services on their vehicle. This act protects consumers from having to go to the dealer for services such as tire changes, oil changes, fluids checks, belt replacements and brake services. It is illegal for dealers to void or deny warranty claims due to having service performed outside of the dealer network. This is great news for any interested parties or current M-Spec Performance clients. If you like our service and how we treat our clients like family then you can continue to use us for all of your servicing needs for anything not covered ... read more

We are keeping it GREEN with our Digital Inspections!

We are keeping it GREEN with our Digital Inspections!

Believe it or not a auto repair shop can go through a lot of paper a year. The conventional workflow process for a client vehicle is multiple sheets of paper getting printed. These papers normally called work orders contain all the pertainant information of the client, what the vehicle concerns are, and what work is to be performed. One copy is made for the technician and one copy is made for the counter man. Generally this paper gets updated and reprinted every time there is new information to be added and the client authorizes further service. This can add up to up to 10-15 sheets per car. If your average shop sees 40-50 cars a week that means an ordinary week can use up to 400 sheets up paper minimally! We here at M-Spec Performance have implemented a system called Mobile Manager. This tablet and cloud based technology allows us to minimize the amount of paper we need to use on a day to day basis. All of our highly trained technicians have a tablet. All the work orders are s ... read more

Does your Auto Service Center torque fasteners?

Does your Auto Service Center torque fasteners?

Most everyone is familiar with the common tools every automotive technician uses on a daily basis. Ratchets, sockets and wrenches come to mind. One of the most important tools that you may not know of is called a torque wrench. In actuality it is not really a wrench at all but rather a very sensitive ratchet which allows the technician to dial in the proper torque force to the fastener. What is "torque"? The simple definition of torque is the exact amount of twisting force applied to an object. In the case of the automotive repair field it is generally the amount of twisting force applied to nuts and bolts required to reassemble vehicle components. How does this affect my car? The improper amount of applied torque to fasteners in your car can negatively affect your vehicle. Vehicle manufacturers such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes have specific torque specifications for almost every nut and bolt in your vehicle. When fasteners are under or over ... read more

How do I choose the right auto repair shop?

How do I choose the right auto repair shop?

Choosing the right auto repair shop can be a daunting and high anxiety task. Lets face it, the industry doesn't have the best reputation. TV news segments on dishonest shops has damaged the public trust. Picking a quality repair shop in Queens and Brooklyn can be really hard to do, especially with so many options. A good independent repair shop can also provide intangible benefits to their customers which a dealership can never hope to achieve. Hopefully these set of questions that you can ask can help you make the right decisions and give you some more things to think about when it comes down to who services your vehicle. General Repair Shop or Specialist? Vehicles today especially German makes such as BMW, Mercedes,  and Audi/Volkwagen can be extremely complicated in their workings. Many times a General repair shop may not have the experience, training, or tools and equipment to tackle the neccessary service your vehicle may need.  ... read more
