The Essential Snow Storm Checklist

The Essential Snow Storm Checklist

New York City has seen its fair share of snow this winter. Make sure to follow this check list and you'll be sure to weather any storm! Battery Make sure the battery has been functioning properly and is fully charged. The cold weather may affect its performance, reducing its cranking power. If the battery hasn't been changed in years and is showing signs of weakness, replace it immediately. Windows Maintain visibility at all times.  Fill wiper fluid in order to wipe away salt, dirt and mud. Wipers Replace your wipers every 6 months or so.  Transmission Avoid overworking your car. If your car is stuck in the snow and you're slamming on the gas to get it out, your transmission light might go on. Shoveling your car out instead of trying to slam through a mountain of snow may save you an unnecessary trip to the repair shop. Oil Engine oil can be affected during the cold weather. Should you trust the dealer or an independent shop?

Should you trust the dealer or an independent shop?

So you are experiencing some issue with your German vehicle. Whether you own a BMW or Mercedes Benz you know that you own an awesome albeit very complicated vehicle. You want to go to the most competent and trusted service center for your vehicle and you don't want to feel like you've been ripped off! If this sounds like the thought process you have had then here are some things to think about between dealer vs an independent. For the purposes of the comparison we have naturally used our shop (M-Spec Performance) as a reference point many times however this should apply to some reputable German car or European specialty shops around the country.  Competency The dealerships have access to manufacturer training and tools. Logically they would be the best equipped and most knowledgable source to repair your Audi, BMW, or Mercedes Benz. If you step into a dealership you will probably hear some boasting about the dealership's superior capabil ... read more

Why asking for "price" is the wrong question to ask

Why asking for "price" is the wrong question to ask

So you own a German Car (maybe its a BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Mini Cooper or Volkswagen) and you are looking for an auto repair shop to service your vehicle. You know you don't want to go to the dealership since their prices are sky high and the level of service leaves you wanting. You get anxious, you worry about getting ripped off. You ask friends and family what to do. You go online and google some quick answers for your particular problem whether its a noise you hear, a fluid dripping from your car or what is the next maintenance service you need. You then go on yelp or type in a google search for the best auto repair shop in your area. Armed with all this information you call up a shop and ask, "Hey I have a noise coming from my car, I think its a gyromotion arm, how much?" The shop gives you a price and you go on and call the next shop on your list. Each shop gives you a different price. Which one do you choose? The cheapest price, right? If auto repair was a ... read more

Do you have to return to the dealer to maintain your new car? NO!

Do you have to return to the dealer to maintain your new car? NO!

Did you know that it an absolute myth that you have to return to the dealer for maintenance? If you own a new car, having an independent repair shop perform maintenance services for you will not void your warranty.  Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act which is also enforced by the Fair Trade Commission (FTC), consumers are protected against the manufacturer voiding their new car warranty if a non dealer service facility performs maintenance services on their vehicle. This act protects consumers from having to go to the dealer for services such as tire changes, oil changes, fluids checks, belt replacements and brake services. It is illegal for dealers to void or deny warranty claims due to having service performed outside of the dealer network. This is great news for any interested parties or current M-Spec Performance clients. If you like our service and how we treat our clients like family then you can continue to use us for all of your servicing needs for anything not covered ... read more

Does your Auto Service Center torque fasteners?

Does your Auto Service Center torque fasteners?

Most everyone is familiar with the common tools every automotive technician uses on a daily basis. Ratchets, sockets and wrenches come to mind. One of the most important tools that you may not know of is called a torque wrench. In actuality it is not really a wrench at all but rather a very sensitive ratchet which allows the technician to dial in the proper torque force to the fastener. What is "torque"? The simple definition of torque is the exact amount of twisting force applied to an object. In the case of the automotive repair field it is generally the amount of twisting force applied to nuts and bolts required to reassemble vehicle components. How does this affect my car? The improper amount of applied torque to fasteners in your car can negatively affect your vehicle. Vehicle manufacturers such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes have specific torque specifications for almost every nut and bolt in your vehicle. When fasteners are under or over ... read more

Does the type of Coolant really matter? Short answer is YES!!!

Does the type of Coolant really matter? Short answer is YES!!!

This is a topic that comes up almost everyday here at M-Spec Performance. Questions about auto repair happen everyday but we see so many vehicle that come through our shop with the incorrect coolant in their system. We wanted to write a short article explaining some of the finer details of using the proper coolant in your high performing German vehicle. What is coolant and what does it do? Lets start off with a simple definition of what coolant does for a vehicle. Coolant like the name states cools the engine by lowering the freezing temperature of the water and increasing its boiling point. The active chemical is ethylene glycol. The other key function of coolant or anti-freeze is lubrication. Coolant lubricates any moving component it comes into contact with like the water pump. Without coolant and just straight water, you could have a waterpump bearing failure prematurely due to inadequate cooling. So what about this incorrect coolant? In this e ... read more

Hit the Brakes!

Hit the Brakes!

With all the stop and go traffic in New York City, it is important to have your vehicle’s braking system functioning at peak efficiency. I remember being eighteen, driving my 95′ BMW M3 and hearing that dreaded grinding noise when applying the brakes. I knew nothing of auto repair at the time, I just knew something was not right with that noise. Hopefully, this article can take some of the mystery out of the magic that makes your car stop when you hit the pedal so next time you need brake service you can make a more informed decision. Most all cars and trucks on the road today use a hydraulic/mechanical braking system. For simplicity’s sake this example will be of a disc brake system. Some older cars have drum brakes all around and many cars use a mix of disc brake on the front and drum brakes on the rear. The difference between drum and disc brakes is the way the hydraulic fluid is used to get the wheels to stop. The majority of your braking is done by the front wheels, which more th ... read more
