BMW OIL LEAKS
Oil leaks are a common problem for most cars and can happen in multiple locations. Some leaks are easier and cheaper to fix than others depending on the labor required. Minor leaks may not have an immediate effect however, long term neglect will lead to major complications. Driving with low oil levels or old oil will create friction between movable parts leading to unnecessary repairs. Regularly changing oil and fixing leaks immediately will increase the longevity of many vehicle parts. Here at M-Spec Performance we have a team of certified technicians ready to diagnose and repair any issue you may have. Below are common locations for BMW oil leaks:
Valve Cover Gaskets
Valve cover oil leaks are one of the most common leaks you may experience on your BMW. Your valve cover gasket may leak because of cracks and wear and tear. These leaks will cause your engine oil to deplete rapidly. The symptoms can result in a burning smell coming from under the hood. Oil will run down your engine block and create major issues if not attended to immediately.
Oil Filter Housing
Oil filter housings are one of the most common leaks we see on vehicles with a 6 cylinder engine. The filter housing is made of rubber and over time will harden causing leaks. This leak will also lead to secondary failures due to oil contamination. The symptoms are usually leaks along the left side of your engine. It is common to change the oil along with the filter when replacing this.
Oil Pan Gaskets
Oil pan gaskets are also common leaks you may encounter. These leaks tend to be more problematic as more oil is able to leak out of the block. Debris from the road can damage the oil pan gasket and oil pan causing large leaks. Along with leaks you may see smoke coming from the engine compartment. If not repaired immediately major damage will be done to the engine .
Head gasket leaks are often severe, complicated, time consuming, and expensive jobs. Just like other leaks you would need to repair this immediately or risk having to replace your car's engine. M-spec Performance has certified technicians to replace your head gaskets quick and effectively.
Main seals leaks are a less common problem and are more expensive to repair. This leak will be very hard for most car owners to identify and will require a knowledgeable technician to repair. The main symptom of a main seal leak is when your car starts to leak engine oil at fast rates. If your car starts to leave behind large black puddles, something is definitely wrong and should be checked out immediately.
Crank seals are located on either end of the crankshaft and can create large leaks. Symptoms can be clutch slip resulting from oil spills. These spills can create a mess which are difficult to clean and can be a fire hazard. Replacing these seals can be labor intensive due to removal of attached components.
